A New Season in the Herb & Garnish Tunnel

Hello friends,

As the days grow longer and the light changes, we’ve been busy in one of our favourite corners of the farm – the herb and edible flower tunnel.

This small tunnel has a long history. It started as a propagation space salvaged from an old strawberry farm, originally heated by a wood stove (yes, Calixta really did wake up every two hours through the night to keep the seedlings alive!). Today, it’s a hub for edible flowers, herbs, and garnishes – one of our most productive spaces, supplying thousands of punnets each season. Being close to the farmyard allows us to pick, chill, and deliver crops at their freshest, and visitors often tell us it’s one of the most beautiful, fragrant spaces on the farm.

Getting Ready for Spring

Over the past few weeks we’ve been prepping the tunnel for the new season: clearing old beds, building new raised beds from reclaimed timber, and topping up the soil with a rich mix of compost, leftover perlite, and soil from tulip crates. After a deep soak to rehydrate everything, our first succession of hardy annuals went in – blue and white borage, nasturtiums, chervil, nigella, and cornflowers – all perfect for garnishing dishes or brightening a spring salad. We sow in three-week successions, so there’s always something fresh and in bloom as the season progresses.

Plant Sale - Save the Date

We’ll be announcing the date for our spring Plant Sale soon, and we can’t wait! Expect unusual, high-quality plants you won’t find anywhere else – perfect for planning your veg patch, tubs, or balcony garden. Last year’s sale had live music, hot food, a bar in the courtyard, and a lovely festive atmosphere. This year, we’re planning even more spring jollity, so keep an eye out for the date announcement and start plotting your growing plans now.
