As many of you will be aware one of the biggest concerns for UK and indeed Global food security is climate change. This year we saw one of the driest years on record. Despite our tireless efforts, we just didn’t have the water available to keep our crops going. The knock-on effect of this will be felt for years to come particularly in combination with erratic temperature extremes and flooding that climate change causes.
Building resilience through innovation is one of our core pillars to ensure the future of the farm, the team and producing healthy, nutrient dense food for our wonderful customers.
One of the many ways in which we are striving for a more resilient future is by expanding agroforestry over the farm. Agroforestry is a land use management system that integrates trees with crops.
Agroforestry has multiple benefits.
Research has revealed that it can:
- Provide microclimates to protect crops in heat extremes
- Increase wildlife habitat
- Improve soil health
- Conserve water and reduce soil erosion
- Sequester carbon
- Provide perennial food crops
We have already started our agroforestry journey and hope to expand it over our farm. If you would like to help you can gift Flourish a tree to plant, it will be labelled with your name.
Alternatively, there are many other projects across the farm that will be helping towards climate resilience, ranging from increasing our indoor growing space to developing water recycling through rain water capture and investing in machinery that reduces the impact on our soil.
