Tulip Mania

We’ve just received a huge delivery of 30,000 tulips directly from the Netherlands – our first time importing them ourselves! They arrived in record time (within 24 hours!) and yesterday was all hands on deck planting these beauties. It’s an exciting milestone for us and an incredible start to next year's flowers.

Those of you who have known us for a while we know we don't mess around when it comes to tulips. They have a fascinating history – this Wikipedia article literally titled 'Tulip Mania' is worth a read, but essentially, at its peak, 10,000 guilders were offered to buy a single tulip – roughly the cost of a mansion at the time.

Our tulips are significantly more affordable but will hopefully inspire a similar seasonal frenzy! Forget the garish bright red and yellow imported supermarket tulips we're accustomed to – ours will be subtle and delicate, with playful and intricate shapes and textures.

All said, these are a beautiful but not a hugely profitable crop due to the level of care needed, but they do provide some important income for us during the hungry gap months of spring, where there's little in the ground to be harvested, and to bring some much-needed colour and beauty to the farm during wet and grey days.

Birthday Cake and Milder Weather

We kicked off the week with a sweet celebration – our grower Josh’s birthday! Michael made the most delectable chocolate cake, and we all enjoyed a slice at break time. Here’s to Josh – hope your day was as fabulous as that cake!

This week’s weather has been a rollercoaster – from frost and extreme cold to soggy, mild days. It’s been a tough one for our crops, particularly indoors. We’ve been battling disease in our Gem lettuces (expected at this time of year, but still sad), Calixta has been covering days and nights as one of our delivery drivers has been on annual leave, and everyone else has been doing an amazing job holding down the fort doing polytunnel building and keeping on with planting.

We’re Hiring!

We’re hiring five new roles for 2026; three growers, as well as a Farm Shop bookkeeper and a local delivery driver.

  • Grower (Salads): Focus on indoor salad production in our tunnels, ensuring year-round consistency.
  • Grower (Indoor Crops): Specialising in tomatoes, cucumbers, and more, working with seasonal workers.
  • Grower (Flowers): Planting, harvesting, maintenance, plus interaction with wholesale and direct customers.
  • Farm Shop Bookkeeper (0.5 or 1 day/week)
  • Local delivery driver, delivering our Produce Boxes and local restaurant orders (part-time).

Apply for any of these with your CV and a cover letter telling us why you’d like to work at Flourish– or a video if you prefer – to [email protected].

Produce Boxes

We were delighted that our Abundant Christmas Boxes were given a name-check in Anna Jones’ brilliant Substack this week!

As Anna points out, our Christmas boxes are officially available to pre-order on the website. Simply add one to your basket to reserve your box. Each includes a beautiful selection of festive staples and farm favourites, from squash, radicchio and red onions to rainbow carrots, speciality potatoes, parsnips, cabbages and Brussels sprouts. Contents may vary slightly depending on the harvest, but everything will be peak season and packed with flavour.

Boxes are in limited supply, with very limited availability for home delivery, so we recommend getting your order in soon!
