Tulip Time!

Dear friends,

The first tulip harvests are coming in this week, led by Triple A, with more varieties following closely behind, including Inzell, Lailabel, Lobke, Lorenzo, Tom Pouce, Valeska and Zambesi. We’re growing more tulips than ever this year and feeling very confident about having an abundance heading into February and Valentine’s Day.

At a time when the majority of tulips are imported, ours are local and organically grown. They travel beautifully, open slowly, and continue to grow in the vase, many unfurling into generous, blousy double blooms around a single stamen. With succession planting both indoors and out, we’ll have several flushes through the short season (usually until May), so now really is the time to enjoy them.

Two other crops we really want to put on your radar are our mustards, Yanagawa (below, with the ever-watchful Finn) and Chirimen Togarashi, both at their absolute peak right now and in Produce Boxes this week. Intensely flavourful and hugely underrated, these are greens that really earn their place on a plate. Yanagawa, in particular, is prized for fermenting but is also excellent cooked – sweet, complex and deeply savoury.

Elsewhere on the farm, the propagation house is full of activity: nearly two acres of onions are now sown, thanks to Linda’s tireless work, alongside early spring crops including lettuces, kohlrabi and herbs. We’ve also begun the first sowings of summer crops – chillies, peppers and tomatoes – with more seed deliveries still to come. It’s always a slightly anxious moment waiting on seeds, but enough is in the ground now that the season feels firmly underway.

It’s been an exceptionally wet week, with significant flooding across the farm. While it’s not without its challenges, we’re choosing to see the upside: after last summer’s drought, it’s genuinely good to know our aquifer is being replenished and the river running full again.

Produce Boxes

We’re delighted to share that Chater’s in Saffron Walden and Burwash Larder in Cambridge are our newest collection points for Produce Boxes, making it even easier to access beautifully grown, seasonal veg from our regenerative farm. See our full list of collection points across Cambridgeshire and London here.

Choosing a local pick-up point means:
